UV purification works differently. It uses ultraviolet light to deactivate microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. It does not primarily remove dissolved salts or hardness. UV can therefore be useful when the main concern is microbiological contamination in otherwise suitable-quality water.

UF, or Ultrafiltration, uses a fine membrane to remove suspended particles and many microorganisms. It does not remove dissolved salts and minerals in the same way as RO.

Many modern water purifiers combine multiple technologies, such as RO + UV + UF, along with sediment and activated-carbon filtration. These combinations can provide broader treatment, but buying the most advanced-looking purifier is not necessarily the best choice. The technology should match the actual quality of your home's water.

Why TDS Matters When Choosing an RO Purifier

TDS, or Total Dissolved Solids, indicates the number of dissolved substances present in water. It is an important parameter when evaluating whether RO purification may be useful.

However, TDS alone does not tell you whether water is completely safe to drink. Two water sources with similar TDS levels can have different concentrations of individual contaminants. For this reason, a proper water-quality test provides more useful information than relying only on a TDS meter.

BIS IS 10500 specifies an acceptable TDS level of 500 mg/L and a permissible limit of 2,000 mg/L in the absence of an alternative source.
