Dishwasher: How It Works, How to Use It

October, 10 2026

A dishwasher is one of the most convenient kitchen appliances for modern homes. Instead of spending time washing plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery by hand, a dishwasher uses water, detergent, heat and powerful water jets to clean and sanitize utensils automatically.

Understanding how a dishwasher works and how to use it correctly can improve cleaning performance, reduce water wastage and help extend the appliance’s lifespan. This guide explains the working process, correct usage, loading tips, cleaning methods and maintenance practices you should know.

What Is a Dishwasher?

A dishwasher is an automatic appliance designed to clean kitchen utensils such as Plates and bowls, Glasses and cups, Spoons, forks and knives, cooking utensils, Microwave-safe containers, Certain dishwasher-safe cookware

Unlike hand washing, a dishwasher cleans utensils by spraying heated water mixed with detergent through rotating spray arms.

Modern dishwashers can also offer different programs for different levels of dirt, including Eco, Intensive, Quick, Auto and Glass cycles.

How Does a Dishwasher Work?

Although dishwashers look complicated from the outside, the basic cleaning process is straightforward.

  1. Water Enters the Dishwasher

When you start a cycle, the dishwasher takes in a controlled amount of water through its inlet system.

Unlike the common belief that a dishwasher continuously fills with water, it generally uses a limited quantity of water during different stages of the cycle.

  1. Water Is Heated

The dishwasher heats the water to the temperature required for the selected program.

Hot water helps to Remove grease, loosen food particles, improve detergent performance, Provide hygienic cleaning

The temperature varies depending on the selected program.

  1. Detergent Is Released

At the appropriate stage, the detergent compartment opens and releases dishwasher detergent. The detergent helps break down Oil, Grease, Food residue, Stains

Important: Regular hand-washing dish soap should not normally be used in a dishwasher because it can create excessive foam and potentially cause problems.

  1. Spray Arms Rotate

The dishwasher uses spray arms with small openings. Water is pumped through these openings at high pressure. As the spray arms rotate, water reaches different parts of the utensils.

  1. Dirty Water Is Drained

After the washing stage, the dirty water containing food particles and grease is pumped out through the drain system.

  1. Rinsing Takes Place

Fresh water is introduced for one or more rinsing stages. This removes remaining detergent and loosened food particles from the utensils.

  1. Drying

After rinsing, the dishwasher enters the drying stage. Depending on the model, drying may use Heated drying, Condensation drying, Air circulation, Automatic door opening, other manufacturer-specific drying technologies

The result is clean and, depending on the program and appliance, mostly dry utensils ready to be put away.

How to Use a Dishwasher Correctly

Using a dishwasher properly is important for achieving good cleaning results.

Step 1: Remove Large Food Particles

Scrape large pieces of food from plates and utensils before loading. You generally don't need to thoroughly wash the dishes by hand.

The dishwasher is designed to clean food residue, but large food particles can unnecessarily clog the filter or drain system.

Step 2: Load the Dishwasher Properly

Place plates vertically in the appropriate rack. Keep enough space between utensils so water can reach all surfaces.

Why Proper Loading Matters

A dishwasher cleans using water jets. If one plate completely blocks another, the water cannot reach the hidden surface.

Every dish should have enough space for water and detergent to reach it.

Step 3: Add Dishwasher Detergent

Use a detergent specifically designed for dishwashers. Depending on the appliance and detergent type, you may use Dishwasher tablets, powder, gel

Step 4: Add Rinse Aid

If your dishwasher has a rinse-aid compartment, fill it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Rinse aid is particularly useful for improving drying and reducing water marks on glasses and other utensils.

Step 5: Select the Right Program

Different programs are designed for different cleaning requirements.

Step 6: Start the Dishwasher

After selecting the program, close the door properly and start the cycle. Avoid opening the dishwasher repeatedly during operation unless necessary.
